President Uhuru Kenyatta was yesterday elected chairman of the African Union’s (AU) peer review forum at the 25th summit of the AU in South Africa.
Mr Kenyatta takes over from Liberia’s President Johnson Sirleaf in heading the forum whose mandate is to ensure that the policies and practices of participating countries conform to the agreed values in democracy and political governance.

Mr Kenyatta said the Africa Peer Review (APR) Mechanism has lost much of its lustre as an innovative, home-grown and effective tool to deliver on good governance for Africa. “It has given way to routine exercises that do not instill the kind of enthusiastic commitment to leadership transformation reminiscence of past years” he said.
The President is currently attending the AU summit in South Africa.
