ABUJA, Nigeria:July 4 (Xinhua) — The International Criminal Court (ICC) has said Nigeria is not under any form of investigation over the activities of the dreaded Boko Haram sect which has been carrying out series of deadly attacks mainly in the northern part and capital city of the West African country.

Chief Prosecutor of the ICC Fatou Bensouda made the declaration Tuesday in Abuja when she paid a courtesy call on President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House, saying the Nigerian government has the primary responsibility of investigating and prosecuting any crime in the country.

She, however, said Nigeria is under preliminary examination and that the court could only intervene as a last resort when there are established cases of crimes against humanity in the country. Meanwhile, the Nigerian president, while thanking the visiting ICC chief prosecutor, said the country will give necessary support to the court.

“Nigeria does not encourage impunity, and it will cooperate with the ICC to check it,” he said. (Xinhua)
