Pathologists have released the much-awaited report on what killed Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaessery, laying to rest various speculative theories about how he met his death on Friday evening. He died a few hours after being admitted at the Karen Hospital.

Nkaissery, 67, died of a heart attack, results of a post-mortem conducted on Monday show, ruling out foul play. The autopsy was conducted by the government pathologist in the presence of two family pathologists, two family doctors, the family lawyer and a family member.

His death has spawned conspiracy theories, with some speculating that he may have been taken away for political reasons. The fact that he died just a month to election raised eye brows among people, and is likely to change the political equation among the Maasai community, in which he was a respected elder, as each side of the political divide will be seeking to gain mileage from his death.

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi claimed that the minister had been assassinated and his family and friends demanded investigations into the sudden death.

Meanwhile, Nkaissery will be buried at his farm in Bisil, Kajiado County, on Saturday. The national funeral committee said a memorial mass will be held on Thursday at the Nairobi Baptist Church on Ngong Road.

“The service begins at 9.30am and is open to the public. Members of the public are advised to be seated by 8.30am,” the Committee chairperson Cleopa Mailu, who is the health Cabinet Secretary, said. He said condolence books will be available from Tuesday at Harambee House, KICC, the Nairobi Baptist Church and all 47 county headquarters.

“Those who wish to pay tribute to the late Cabinet Secretary may sign condolence books at the said venues.”

The CS’s family has appointed Saitoti Ole Maika as its spokesperson. Saitoti said in a statement Nkaissery’s widow who had been hospitalized following the death of her husband had been discharged. “We continue to pray for God’s grace and fortitude as she mourns her beloved husband,” Mr Saitoti said.

Eight people believed to have come into contact with the late CS on Friday have been quizzed by the police. They include waiters and guards at the Bomas of Kenya who were questioned by detectives from the homicide unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
