5 killed as wayward truck rams crowd in S. Philippines

DAVAO CITY, Philippines: July 15 (Xinhua) — Five people were killed and several others wounded when a truck rammed a group of people at a dumpsite in the southern Philippine city of Davao Saturday afternoon, local police said on Sunday.

The accident happened at New Carmen, a village in the city’s Tugbok district, around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Superintendent Marcial Magistrado, spokesperson of the southern Mindanao police.

Magistrado told Xinhua that the dump truck owned by Comval Tropical Fruits Inc. was traveling towards the dumpsite but lost its brakes and plowed a dozen people.

The injured were rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center for treatment.Magistrado said the driver is now under police custody facing criminal charges. (Xinhua)
