Zuku takes DStv head on with a cut in prices

Just two weeks after MultiChoice raised its DStv accesss fees by 15% citing the falling value of the shilling, Wananchi Group, the owners of pay-TV provider Zuku, has cut monthly subscription fees for its internet, pay television and telephone services by Khs200.

This will tighten competition for customers as Zuku hopes to attract customers disgruntled by the often-escalating prices of DStv. Zuku’s price reduction comes on a new service package known as Zuku Infinite, which will see customers either subscribe for internet and telephone services or internet and pay television, or take third option that has the three bundled together.
Subscribers previously had no option but to pay for all the three services, even for those that they did not require.

Yesterday, Zuku management said the move to change its “Triple Play” service was necessitated by increased demand for internet. Subscribers opting for the 10 megabytes per second (Mbp) offer will pay Ksh4,099 from the previous Ksh4,299, those on 20Mbps will pay Ksh5,299 from Ksh5,499 while the 50Mbps subscribers will pay Ksh9,799 from Ksh9,999.

“Existing clients have the option to remain on their current package or upgrade to the Infinite packages,” said Wananchi Group chief executive Richard Alden in a statement.  “Zuku recognises the dynamic and growing needs of our customers and is committed to offering tailor-made products and solutions.”

Mr Alden said the firm is targeting customers working from home, streaming sports, videos, music and video conferencing services.   Subscribers, he added, can use multiple devices on the same Wi-Fi connection, providing entertainment for an entire family.

Optional TV add-ons include prime TV with 74 premium television channels at Ksh499, mega TV with 109 premium TV channels at Ksh999 and Asian TV with 35 Asian TV channels at Ksh999.

This means that when a customer purchases 1Mbps, he or she will gets 60 Edge TV channels and phone at Ksh2,799 while Infinite 4 or 4Mbps, comes with 60 Edge TV channels and phone at Ksh2,999. Others are 10Mbps, 60 Edge TV channels and phone at Ksh4, 099; 20Mbps, 60 Edge TV channels and phone at Ksh5,299 as well  50Mbps, 60 Edge TV channels and phone at Ksh9,799. (Business Daily)
