Francis Wangusi has been re-appointed as director-general of Communications Authority of Kenya. The Communications Authority of Kenya’s board said it had renewed his term for another four years.
“Mr Wangusi, who is the current director general of the authority emerged the best in an interview conducted by the board and which attracted a total of 29 applicants,” the board said in a statement.
Mr Wangusi, who has held the position since 2012, has had a rough ride, especially with digital migration, which set him up against private media houses.

The fight even went to court and resulted in a strike by broadcasters who switched off the signal in protest. Media house accused Mr Wangusi of denying Kenyans their right to information by shutting down three leading television stations – NTV, KTN and Citizen TV- which were pushing for more time to acquire and distribute their digital broadcasting equipment.
Mr Wangusi had to go through an interview to reclaim his position as required by Kenya Information Communications Act as amended in 2013 that demand that the position be filled through competitive process.
The Board advertised the position in May, attracting 29 applicants out of whom six were shortlisted for interviews. Mr Wangusi has 27 years’ experience in communications and served as director in departments of broadcasting and licencing compliance and standards. He has also held the position of senior lecturer in Department of Telecommunications Engineering at Multimedia University.
