Theft or conspiracy? How Joy Doreen Biira’s Benz was stolen

When KTN news anchor Joy Doreen Beira’s Mercedes Benz E220 mysteriously disappeared from the parking lot at Standard Centre two days to Christmas Day, it appeared like the work of a car theft syndicate.

It was a normal working day for Joy Doreen as she frantically prepared the business bulletin for the day when some minutes to the 9PM news show, she realized her car keys were missing. Alarmed, she went out to check on her car in the parking lot outside. It was missing!

“She immediately reported to the (Standard Group) security and transport officer about the incident who together with her did another check at the gate and established that the m/v had left the gate at around 19:39 hours,” according to report by the Industrial Area police, where the matter was reported.

The police launched investigations and, surprisingly, recovered the Ksh2.8 million machine in Kisumu in the possession of Joy Doreen’s colleague at the office, Mr Aaron Ochieng. The vehicles registration numbers had been changed from KBY 831K to KCH 117L. Mr Ochieng, the KTN News Editor, was arrested alongside the security guards who were on duty on December 23rd to help with investigations.

While the incident still baffles many in media and security circles, there are also speculations that the theft could have been a set-up by Joy Doreen to have the insurance company to compensate her with a newer car. This spin has not been independently confirmed but it makes some sense given that Mr Ochieng and Joy Doreen are close friends, according to KTN sources.

The full police investigations report is being eagerly awaited to shed light on a case that’s likely to tighten security in many parking yards across the city, but also more details could emerge if Mr Ochieng is taken to court to face charges of theft and forgery. Cars being stole from even the strictest parking lots isn’t news, but the players in the Joy Doreen case makes it an interesting case to follow.

Police and investigators will try piece together events leading to the theft to prove if indeed it was ‘genuine’ theft or a conspiracy by the two.
