Teachers join high pay league after 60% court award

The Industrial Court today awarded teachers a pay rise of between 50 to 60 per cent with immediate effect, catapulting their earnings to a new high that will revival private sector salaries.

The increase will be backdated from July 2013 and goes up to July 2017. The court ruled that Collective Bargaining Agreement should be registered between Teachers Service Commission and Teachers Union within 30 days.

Teachers and the TSC had taken their remuneration battle to the employment and labour relations court after the January 2015 strike that paralysed education around the country.

The bitterly contested pay increase for teachers goes back to 1994, when the late Ambrose Adongo was Secretary General of The Kenya National Union of Teachers.
