No one to save Nakuru’s only fire engine as protestors set it ablaze

Attempts by Nakuru County’s fire department to deploy its only fire engine to put out bonfires lit by protesters turned tragic when the protesters set the engine ablaze.

The fire engine, estimated to cost Ksh50 million was to put out bonfires lit by demonstrating BodaBoda operators at Salgaa area, along the busy Nakuru-Eldoret highway. The Boda boda operators were apparently protesting over inadequate parking space at Salgaa, which the claimed had been taken over by trucks.

It is reported that they used petrol to set the engine ablaze. The driver, who was hurt in the process, could not drive off because two trucks were at the time blocking the engine.

“The youths attacked us first by pelting stones at the engine before petrol was poured on it  and they set it on fire,” Julias Yeter, one of the fire fighters is quoted.
