The National Assembly has approved the nomination of Eugene Wamalwa by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary. At the same time, the committee on National Security has rejected the nomination of Monica Juma as Secretary to the Cabinet.
She was to replace Francis Kimemia who stepped down after he was linked to a corruption case, but was later cleared by the Ethics and Anti-corruption commission. The commission did not find evidence in the case where he was mentioned in connection with irregularities in the awarding of a tender valued at Ksh 1 billion at the ministry of interior and national coordination.
Wamalwa, the former Saboti MP, served as justice and constitutional affairs minister in the grand coalition government. On June 9, Tuesday, he told the MPs during his vetting that he is worth Sh400 million in assets owns farms, houses and a thriving law firm that has even represented Yoweri Museveni, Uganda’s president, in 2001.
“To me it is not a job but an opportunity to serve Kenyans. The new position requires me to divorce politics so I can serve Kenyans and that is what I have done,” Mr Wamalwa said.
His top priority will be ensuring Galana Kulalu Irrigation Scheme is successful in order to boost food security in Kenya.
