A week after the University of Nairobi was shut following student riots, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has today been closed indefinitely after students went on the rampage disrupting examinations.
A notice from the Kakamega-based university’s Acting Registrar ( Academic Affairs) Dr C. Onyancha gave students up to 11 am to clear from the institution’s premises.
“This is to inform all students that due to the ongoing unrest of disrupting examinations from taking place, the University Senate has decided to close the University with immediate effect. All students are hereby informed to clear and vacate the University premises immediately but not later than 11.00 a.m today, the 12th day of April 2016,” read the notice.
The students resolved to boycott exams to protest decision to bar those with fee balances from taking the tests.
They also claim the university Vice-Chancellor Prof Fredrick Otieno is mostly unavailable to listen to their grievances as he is based in South Africa. Other grievances include moonlighting lecturers who are unavailable for many classes and frequent instances of missing examination results.
