The construction of Aluminium Cans factory in Emali, Makueni will be completed by August this year, the Nigerian company tasked to build it has confirmed.
GZ Industries (GZI) is seen as one of major manufacturing plants to be built in the country. The Ksh2 billion project is being constructed by Civicon Limited, a subsidiary of Transcentury Group.
Speaking during a media tour on Friday, Transcentury Group CEO Dr Gachao Kiuna said that the project, which commenced in May 2014, will bring a new face to the manufacturing sector in the country, becoming the largest aluminium plant in East Africa.
“We foresee a paradigm shift in the face of Makueni county. Civicon and Transcentury Group are proud to be involved in such a project. We have taken roughly one year and we hope to complete the project by August this year,” said Mr Kiuna.
The facility sits on a 50-acre piece of land and targets the local beer and beverage industry. “We will start supplying to the local market later this year,” added Kiuna.
The company will have a production capacity of 1.2 billion cans annually. This will significantly reduce overreliance on imported cans, with all cans currently being used in East Africa being imported.
