Police in Los Angeles are investigating the theft of the dress worn by Lupita Nyong’o to the Oscars on Sunday evening, the sheriff’s office has confirmed. The white dress, which was designed by Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein and contains 6,000 white Akoya pearls, according to TMZ, is reportedly worth Ksh18.3million.

Sergeant Richard Bowman, the detective bureau supervisor at the West Hollywood office of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department, told the Guardian that they received a call at around 11.20 on Wednesday evening from a member of Nyong’o’s team to report the theft. “The dress was the only thing that was reported missing. Police are currently trying to find out if the thief was captured on any of the hotel’s security cameras. There are currently no suspects,” Bowman said.

Nyong’o is not the first person to fall victim to this kind of high-fashion theft. In 2013, jewellery worth a million dollars was stolen from a hotel in Nice, after model Cara Delavigne wore them to the Cannes film festival. Earlier this month, thieves stole the Oscar statuette won by Charlie Chaplin in 1929 from a museum in Paris. Representatives for Nyong’o declined to comment.
