The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) intercepted cocaine worth an estimated Ksh5 million at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Saturday. According to officials from the tax agency, the 1.9-kilogramme consignment had been concealed in the soles of ladies’ shoes that were on transit from Uganda to the Netherlands.

Officials with the aid of sniffer dogs confiscated the narcotics, where a parcel containing a suspicious substance – believed to be cocaine – was found. “The samples were drawn and taken to KRA laboratory for analysis. The results confirmed that the narcotic drugs are cocaine,” said KRA today.

The taxman says it has significantly enhanced its capacity to identify narcotics and other illicit products as part of the Customs and Border Control function. Officers have also intensified screening procedures on all cargo entering or leaving the country.
