Mr George Mwangi addressses journalists after being given the cheque.
It sounds like stuff from the movies. But after spending a total of Ksh16000 to bet on 13 games, 50-year-old George Mwangi was announced the new Sportpesa jackpot winner of almost Ksh30 million.
The Nairobi-based business man was unveiled the winner earlier yesterday at the Serena Hotel at a function presided over by Sportpesa officials and their brand ambassador, musician Wyre.
Mr Mwangi, who resides in Nairobi’s Githurai area, said that he was only introduced to betting five months ago and could not believe that he won the Ksh29.5 million, an amount many gamblers struggled to win.
“I do not consider this gambling otherwise I would not have wasted my money on it,” he said. “It is a challenge.”
Visibly composed in spite of the change of fortunes, Mr MWangi added: “I take it as a game of fortune where you combine luck and commitment to succeed.”
The ‘footaholic’ as he refers to himself is also an ardent Gor Mahia fan. “I am a huge Manchester United Fan and also locally I support Gor Mahia,” he said.
He attributes his success to patience and planning but also his affection with soccer that dates back to three decades ago.
Mr Mwangi is, however, not in a hurry to put the money into use, noting that he has to budget well on how to productively spend the windfall. “This is certainly big money and I had not planned for it though I believed I would win it someday. Everyone can win it….all you need is trust instinct and of course take risks,” he says.
Sportpesa jackpot is a betting competition that puts together a total of 13 games. The grand winner has to predict results of 13 games correctly.
