Global fast food franchise Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is set to open a new branch on Limuru Road next week, bringing its total tally in the country to six.
The fast growing middle-income economy in Kenya coupled with a rising demand for quality fast-ready-to-eat-food has been pulling global brands to Nairobi. Notably, global franchise restaurants such as Domino’s Pizza, Subway and Cold Stone Creamery have open branches in the capital as a way of getting entry into the East African region.
“With Kenya’s fast-paced lifestyles and a great consumer spending power there is need for KFC to open new branches in the country and tap into this virgin market,” said KFC’s Managing Director Justin Melvin during the official opening of the first drive-thru restaurant in East Africa located on Mombasa Road.
KFC is expanding its global presence in its growth strategy, something that the MD says will make the brand ‘customers ultimate innovation in convenience’ especially with the drive-thru model that allows customers to place orders, pay, pick up their food while still in their cars.
The Mombasa Road drive-through outlet is situated at Total petrol station, next to Airtel head office and has three stops. The first stop has a banner with all foods that one can order. The second has a cashier who takes your order and as your car passes the cashier’s desk, a buzzer located on the ground alerts the people who will park the food for you and you collect it as you drive out of the outlet.
“Our service time is between two and five minutes from the point of making an order to the point of exit,” notes Patrick Meme, the branch’s operations manager. “However, this is still long and with the systems all in place, the turnaround time is expected to be at most three minutes.”
The building housing the drive-thru is owned by Total Kenya, with KFC only leasing it. The partnership between the two companies is ‘mutually beneficial’ with the Limuru Road branch scheduled for opening next week. It is also located at Total refilling station. “We are working closely with other partners to bring non-fuel activities to our stations as part of our growth strategy,” said Total Kenya MD Ms Ada Eze.
The Mombasa Road branch has 35 employees working in two shifts per day and a similar number is expected with the Limuru Road branch.
