ACCRA, Ghana: June 19 (Xinhua) — The Ghana Amputee Football Federation (GAFF) on Tuesday began seeking sponsorship ahead of the national team’s participation in the Amputee World Cup due in Moscow, Russia, early October.
Francis Adjetey Sowah, president of the GAFF, in a statement emailed to Xinhua, appealed to corporate organizations and individuals to support the national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, to enable them to participate in this year’s global tournament scheduled for October 6-15.
“May I use this opportunity to appeal to all and sundry to lend a hand of support to the Black Challenge not to only take part in the competition, but also to win it to become the first African nation to do so,” he said here at the launch of the forthcoming World Cup.
“We are convinced that the crop of players at our disposal have the wherewithal to achieve that feat,” said Sowah, who doubles as president of the Amputee Football Federation of Africa (AFFA).
Sowah said since the GAFF lacked the financial capabilities to foot the team’s bill as it prepared for the championship, it would depend on the support of such entities to actualize their dream of annexing the trophy.
He called on all amputees desiring to play in the national team to avail themselves of the on-going recruitment exercise to get the best crop of players to don the national team jersey. Ghana won the earliest African Cup in Sierra Leone in 2007 but won silver during last year’s competition held in Ghana after losing to Liberia in the grand finale.
The West African nation placed sixth at the last Amputee World Cup in Argentina two years ago after a historic quarter-finals berth, the first by any African nation in the 30-year history of the games. Eighteen nations will compete in this year’s World Cup. (Xinhua)
