The construction of a second bridge linking Mombasa Island and the North Coast has been long overdue, with engineers expressing concern over the current bridge, which has served the two coastal regions for almost 40 years. Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) appears to have moved closer to actualizing the dream by awarding Deloitte Consulting Limited the contract to oversee the construction of the second Nyali bridge.
In conjunction with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India, Deloitte will supervise the construction as a lead transaction advisor, starting with a feasibility study as well as evaluating contractors who will be given the tender to run the project.
“The construction of a new Nyali bridge will not only help drive economic transformation within the coastal region, but also ease congestion at the Port of Mombasa as an important gateway into the East Africa,” said Sammy Onyango, Deloitte East Africa CEO, adding that an estimated 95% of Kenya’s international trade is conveyed through the Port of Mombasa.
“The private-public partnership model is an excellent avenue for improving infrastructure since it allows for deployment of private capital in public projects. This is critical in unlocking economic development and fast-tracking the attainment of social and economic goals.”
The deal, worth over Ksh 9.2 billion ($100 million), is likely to commence later this year and will provide an alternative link between Mombasa Island and North Coast.
