The trial of 13 suspects accused of defrauding the Government of more than Ksh10 billion in the Anglo Leasing scandal has been halted.
Senior Principal Magistrate Felix Kombo stopped the trial, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, until the High Court gives a ruling on a petition by businessman Deepak Kamani challenging his prosecution. “In the premises of the order given by the High Court, the hearing which was to run consecutively for seven days is hereby suspended to await the outcome of the High Court case,” said Mr Kombo.

The magistrate was acting on Justice George Odunga’s order last Friday that suspended the start of the hearing until he gives a ruling on the application by Mr Kamani. Among those facing charges for the Anglo Leasing scandal are former Finance ministers David Mwiraria and Chris Obure, former Postmaster-General Francis Chahonyo, former Transport Permanent Secretary Sammy Kyungu and a former financial secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Samuel Bundotich.
Others are former Internal Security PS Dave Mwangi, former Finance PS Joseph Magari, former head of debt management David Onyonka, brothers Deepak Kamani and Rashmi Kamani and their father, Chamanlal Kamani.
The case will be mentioned on September 22 for further directions.
