Amid allegations last week from Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) that caramel colouring used as ingredients in Coca-Cola products could cause cancer, soft drinks giants Coca-Cola has launched a promotion that will see winners receive cash prizes and other Olympic Games merchandize.
The promotion which touched down today at the company headquarters in Nairobi will run for twelve weeks and is open to any consumer who uses Coca-Cola products.
With the Euro Cup noise fainting and sporting fans gearing up for the excitement of the imminent Olympics Games slated for 27th July to 12th August, the promotion will make the Games memorable, according to Coca-Cola Kenya Country Manager Rocky Findley.
“To celebrate this year’s games, we are launching an exciting Olympic Games countdown promotion which will see thousands of Kenyans win cash prizes and merchandise, making the 2012 Olympic Games more memorable for them and their families,” said Mr Findley.
To take part in the promotion, consumers need to purchase any 300ml or 500ml glass bottle of Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Krest Bitter Lemon or Stoney Tangawizi, and check under the crown to see whether they are a winner.
Prizes include cash awards in denominations of Ksh200, Ksh500, Ksh1000, Ksh5000, Ksh10,000, Ksh50,000 and Ksh100,000, as well as consolation prizes of t-shirts, caps and free sodas. To ease distribution, lower cash prizes (such as Ksh 200 up to Ksh 50,000) will be paid to winners directly through M-Pesa money transfer services by texting the unique code under the line to 5054.
The Ksh 100,000 prize will be collected from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Nairobi. Winners of t-shirts and caps will be able to collect their prizes from the nearest Coca-Cola distributor, plant or redemption retailer, and sodas from the closest outlet across the country.
Having partnered with Olympic Games since 1928 during the Amsterdam Holland Games, Coca-Cola has renewed its historic bond with the International Olympic Committee to 2020, a relationship lasting nearly a century.
With the alleged reports that Coca-Cola soda has carcinogenic elements, 4-MEI and 2-MEI, Coca-Cola Company Kenya Marketing Manager Mrs Catherine Mudachi said that the products are safe. “Our products are safe and there is no cause for alarm,” said Mudachi.
