The Government has finally spoken on the ongoing unrest and burning of schools which has reached crisis level. On a day when one the first national schools, Iten Boys, was burned, the ministry of Education remained adamant that teachers and students should remain calm, ignoring calls to close all schools to end school fires and tensions.
The Principal Secretary for Education Dr Belio Kipsang says in a statement that the Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i is consulting with school heads and church leaders to address the issue.
Here is the full statement from the Ministry of Education
The country has witnessed an inexplicable wave of school unrests with valuable school infrastructure set on fire during the better part of Second Term in the Schools Calendar.
In view of the unrests and arson attacks in schools, the Cabinet Secretary has found it necessary to continue holding consultative meetings with stakeholders. He is accordingly scheduled to have a consultative meeting with members of the clergy and that of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development tomorrow to deliberate on the matter with a view to exploring ways of ensuring long term solution to the problem.
The government, however, urges students, teachers and school administrators to be calm and avoid confrontation and destruction of property by deliberately addressing issues of concern to the school community. Most schools are already undertaking end of term examinations and mock examinations as planned.
Security institutions have put in place systems to ensure the safety of students and school property.
Signed,
Dr Belio Kipsang
PRINCIPAL SECRETARY,
STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
