Former Attorney General Amos Wako elected to the UN Law Commission

NAIROBI, Saturday  – Former Kenya’s Attorney General Amos Wako has been successfully re-elected for a second five year term at the the  International Law Commission (ILC) during the United Nations General Assembly that met in Geneva.

 A statement from Kenya’s ministry of foreign affairs said on Friday Wako was re-elected to the commission after garnering a total of 138 votes, which was way above the 96 vote threshold required to achieve simple majority.

 “The former Attorney General of Kenya was amongst 13 candidates from Africa that werevying for seats allocated to the African region,” the statement said.

aving served in the commission since 2006, Wakowas seeking re- election to the commission for a second five year term.  The United Nations General Assembly met on Thursday with members of the International Law Commission.

  The International Law Commission meets in Geneva for up to three months each summer and is composed of experts representing the world’s principal legal systems.  Each is elected for a term of five years by the U.N General assembly to serve in their personal capacity as International Law experts rather than as representatives of governments.  (Xinhua)
