The University of Nairobi administration today broke its silence over the weekend killing of its two students through mob justice, clarifying that, in fact, they were part of a gang of muggers.

Julius Omondi and Mohammed Yusuf were killed by fellow students after they were found with a stolen laptop.

UoN Vice-Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi said in a statement that the university’s security personnel had intervened and were even hurt by students as they rescued the victims and rushed them to the clinic.

“One of the suspects passed on while at the University Health Services, and the other one was rushed to MP Shah Hospital where he was admitted but passed on thereafter,” Prof Mbithi said.

The deceased are said to have been part of a gang of five that had accosted a student and snatched his laptop bag.  The student raised alarm and fellow students came out of their rooms and pursued the gang towards State House road.
