Government to take stock of progress in MDGs

MOMBASA, Kenya


The Ministry of Devolution and Planning has organized a major conference to take stock of the progress made towards achieving Millennium Development Goals and chart the way forward.

Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) are eight international development goals that were established by the United Nations in the year 2000 and were supposed to be achieved by the year 2015. The goals include eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, improving maternal health care, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, among others.

The conference, which is set to run from June 20th -21st, 2013 in the coastal city of Mombasa, is expected to come up with a framework to assist in realigning government activities towards achieving the set targets. The current set of MDGs targets are set to expire in 2015 and nations are reviewing progressing to chart the way forward.

The forum intends to promote an inclusive to advocate a development agenda informed by national and local priorities. It also aims at accelerating progress to 2015, while taking stock of the lessons learnt along the way to help inform the development agenda after 2015. Among those expected to attend the Mombasa conference are Ministry officials, governors, UNDP Country Director, CEO Kenya Association of Manufacturers, EU representative among others.
