KAMPALA, Uganda: July 14 (Xinhua) — Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has hailed Iran for its persistence to resist western pressure regarding its nuclear ambitions, a State House statement has said.

Museveni made the comments while meeting a special envoy of the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who was in the country to invite him to attend a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement due next month in Iran.

“We know what is happening in Iran, too much pressure from the West but we are glad that you can manage,” he said, adding that Uganda supports all countries having nuclear energy for peaceful purposes especially for energy.

Museveni called for the strengthening of the Afro-Asian solidarity. Reza Taghipour, the special envoy and also minister of information and communication technology (ICT) said Iran was inviting Museveni as one of the revolutionaries of Africa.

He said despite the sanctions by western powers, Iran has been able to produce everything and depend on itself and was able to export 48 billion U.S. dollars worth of non-oil products.

The two leaders discussed various bilateral and global issues including the situation in Syria and also pledged to cooperate in fields such as ICT, agriculture, energy, science and technology and construction.

According to the State House statement, Museveni accepted to the invitation to attend the summit.
