ADDIS ABABA (Xinhua) — Ethiopian Airlines won the Gold Award in the African Airline of the Year 2011/2012 Award given by the African Aviation News portal, a statement issued by the carrier said on Friday.

According to the statement, Ethiopian Airlines emerged ahead of the pack garnering the highest number of the votes cast by the readers and followers of African Aviation.

They voted in an online poll, set up at the African Aviation’s website as well as in various industry meetings and airline congress events attended by officials of African Aviation. More than 20,000 votes were registered in total, with Kenya Airways getting the Silver Award and Precision Air Tanzania pegging down the Bronze Award.

After the announcement, Ethiopian CEO Tewolde Gebremaryam said, “It gives an immense pleasure to the Ethiopian team to receive a vote of confidence for its services as the continent’s leading airline.”

In 2011, Ethiopia received African Airlines Association (AFRAA) award for “Airline of The Year for 2010 Award” for being consistently profitable over the years and recording strong financial results. Ethiopian Airlines was also named Africa’s most profitable Airline by Air Transport World in 2010 and received the “Silver Boeing Performance Excellence Award”.(Xinhua)
