Seventeen pilgrims have died in a road accident at Salama in Makueni County while travelling from Mombasa to the National Shrine in Subukia for prayers.
Tributes pour in lead by President William Ruto’s, who in a tweet, wrote: “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of 17 pilgrims from St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church, Mikindani Parish.”
“Our heartfelt condolences go to the families, friends, parishioners and the entire Catholic community who are mourning this painful loss.
“We stand with them in this difficult moment and pray that God grants them strength, comfort and peace.
“We also pray for the swift recovery of those injured in the accident. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”
Former ICT Cabinet Secretary and People Prosperity Party leader Eliud Owalo has said the incident is heartbreaking and that, once again, is a reminder of the urgent need to protect human life on Kenyan roads.
“I solemnly call upon the relevant government bodies and authorities to take immediate, decisive, and sustained action to improve road safety. We must not continue to lose our people to preventable road accidents. Safer roads, stricter enforcement, and better infrastructure are a moral and safety imperative,” Owalo said.
