KNUT has issued a 30-day strike notice following the appeal by the Teachers Service Commission against a 50% to 60% pay rise. Teachers are open to dialogue but will down their their tools as soon as the period lapses, said KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion, the Star reports.
“We shall not relent in our fight to ensure teaching is made an attractive and first choice profession, and to improve the status of teachers, in particular salaries, working conditions and career opportunities,” Sossion said in a statement on Tuesday.
He said the TSC was unable to to conclude a Collective Bargaining Agreement incorporating an award of basic salary. “Failing to conclusively meet an agreement on any other item or award, excluding the award on basic salary, amounts to disregarding the court’s decision and directions,” he said.
On July 13, the commission, which is the teachers’ employer, appealed against the court ruling awarding teachers the pay rise, spread over four years. TSC chief executive officer Nancy Macharia and lawyer Stella Ruto requested that the “urgent” matter be heard by the Court of Appeal.
