Standard Media is set to launch a new television station to run alongside KTN. The station, code named KTN2, will be a 24-hour news channel modeled along global broadcasters like CNN and BBC.
The launch had been planned for June 26th but was postponed to early July 7, to give the company more time to prepare. Another source said the launch may have been pushed until the company implements a major restructuring in staffing levels.

With a number of journalists expected to be sacked, the new station is likely to be run by the KTN team. The news TV model has been a challenge in Kenya.
K24, which launched itself as a 24-hour news channel, had to change strategy and get into other general programming with prime time as its main news segment. KTN is taking advantage of the opportunities provided by digital broadcasting, which has an explosion of TV stations with various niche markets, including news.
The fear is that the news station can easily cannibalise on the KTN’s news market.
