NAIROBI – Messages of condolences are streaming in following the sudden death last night of Homabay Senator Otieno Kajwang’, which has shaken the political scene and delt a blow to his party, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Mr Kajwang’, a mercurial lawyer and politician with a high sence of humour, died at 11.34 pm of cardiac arrest at Mater Hospital in Nairobi where he was rushed after complaining of chest pains.
Tom Joseph Kajwang’, who is also the Ruaraka MP, said his brother was rushed to hospital at around 9.30 pm yesterday. The body has been moved from Mater Hospital to Lee Funeral Home. Speaking at Mater Hospital shortly after midnight, Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki said the country has lost a great leader.
ODM spokesperson Philip Etale confirmed the death shortly after midnight. “Sad to have lost Senator Otieno Kajwang’. It is by the will of God that Senator had to depart from our midst at this time,” he said through a post on his Facebook page.
Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen posted on his official Twitter handle announcing the death of the ODM Senator. “So shocked that my colleague and friend Senator Kajwang’ has passed on .Will remember him as passionate and eloquent debater. A man full of life and humour,” Mr Murkomen tweeted.
Cardiac arrest is the abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. The time and mode of death are unexpected. It occurs instantly or shortly after symptoms appear.

Gerald Otieno Kajwang was born on 15th July 1959. He belonged to the Orange Democratic Movement and represented Mbita Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya since since 1997. In the bitterly contested 2013 elections, Otieno Kajwang was elected to represent Homa Bay County as a senator.
