Radio Africa’s Bamba TV has joined the digital migration trend with a Ksh534 million investment that will see it roll out its signal to Nairobi and its environs ahead of the great analogue switch off at the end of this month. The group joins other Kenyan broadcasters in the digital TV space that were granted a single digital distributor licence to enable them broadcast their own digital signals.
Bamba TV, which went live on December 18 this year, will have over 50 channels to air, 24 of which will be exclusive with the rest being free-to-air .The company is planning to roll out its signal to the whole country by the end of March 2015 and plans are underway to up the investment in the next five years to offer more improved services to Kenyans.
“Over the next five years, we will ratchet-up this investment to KSh890 million to enable Kenyans migrate to the new digital platform at no recurring monthly expense and with ease, giving them access to diverse quality content,” said Bamba TV General Manager Danny Mucira.
He added that digital migration would open up a new frontier in the television industry and will come with enormous opportunities for the industry such as growth in local content production and youth employment.
The impending switch-off of the analogue TV signal is part of UN’s International Telecommunications Union (ITU) that requires all its member states to shut down analogue signals by June 17 2015.
