Now CMC eyes construction boom to reclaim glory

CMC Motors Group, is eying the construction equipment market to reclaim its lost glory after a protracted two-year boardroom war.

The motor vehicles dealer, now owned by the Al Futtaim Group of Dubai plans to leverage on the market segment to regain as much as 20% of its total market share by 2016.

CMC Motors Managing Director Solomon Muturi said the firm, also the local Case Construction Equipment authorised dealer said it will be focusing on delivering new generation equipment to players in the local building and construction sector.

He spoke earlier today when he launched two new construction machines. Mr Muturi said the firm has already invested in the technical facilities and the training of its local technicians to guarantee its capacity to serve the specialist market.

“At CMC, we are excited at the growth prospects presented by the massive infrastructure developments locally and in the region and we are actively exploring opportunities to be the mechanised equipment supplier of choice,” Mr Muturi said.

This was even as the government confirmed plans to ensure that international contractors undertaking projects locally adhere to the 30% local content rule by sourcing their equipment from local dealers to spur growth for local motor dealers.

Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Eng. Michael Kamau, said the adherence to local content sourcing will apply on all contracts relating to the proposed 10,000km upgrade of roads to bitumen standards.

“My ministry is committed to supporting and encouraging contractors to source their machines from local dealers in line with the government 30% local content policy,” he said at the same function.

According to CMC Motors Group CEO Mark Kass, the Al Futtaim Group will use Kenya as its regional expansion launch pad with plans to expand its business to Rwanda and South Sudan.

“The Al Futtaim Group is committed to reclaiming CMC’s lost market share by investing in all facets of the business and we are looking forward to positive times ahead,” Mr Kass said. “We are ready to change the game and the launch of an extended range of CASE Construction Equipment confirms this commitment,” he added.
