Nation Media Group will start selling digital set-top boxes in three weeks’ time.

The free-to-air set-top boxes procured by the African Digital Network consortium of Nation Media Group, Standard Group and Royal Media Services, will retail at Ksh3,500 with no monthly charges.

Addressing the group’s annual general meeting yesterday, Nation Media Group chairman Wilfred Kiboro said the company hopes to reclaim viewership levels with the sale of the free-to-air set top boxes as some estimated two million people have been cut-off by pay-TV.

“The census showed there are about 4.5 million TV sets and there are estimated 2.2 million to 2.3 million set-top boxes in the country. This means there are about two million people out there who are not enjoying TV,” he said.

“It is even worse as 95 per cent are on Pay-TV which means the majority are paying between Sh800 to Sh10,000 per month as the free-to-air has been scuttled through the switch-off (from analogue).”
