Nakumatt opens sports store

Regional retailer, Nakumatt Holdings, has launched of its first dedicated active sports gear departmental store. The 6,000-square feet concept store, located at the Westgate Shopping Mall and branded Sports Planet, will stock a wide variety of sports gear and apparel featuring some of the leading global brands.

The launch of the Ksh100 million Sports Planet branded sports goods store, marks the start of a product diversification strategy for Nakumatt, as it seeks to enhance its market reach in the Sports retailing sector. This follows the recent launch of Private Brands (Nakumatt Blue Label, Nakumatt Select) and stand-alone footwear (Clarks & Skechers), toys (Kids &Co) and multimedia (Planet Media Cinema) stores.

Sports Planet will also feature an in store Golf Simulator machine to be manned by local Golf Pro. Nakumatt Holdings, Business Development Lead Neel Shah confirmed that plans to rollout similar concept stores at other locations in Kenya and the East Africa region.

“Sports Planet, stores, will be the home of quality leading global brands and is part of Nakumatt’s overall commitment to deepen formal retailing in this region,” Mr Neel explained.

Globally, in store golf simulator machines are gaining prominence as technological solutions designed to assist golfers purchase golfing clubs and related accessories that perfectly fit their swing. The provision of such a machine, is part of the new Sports Planet business strategy to provide cutting edge customer service and product knowledge assistance.

Sporting gear includes treadmills, gym equipment, weights, gym accessories for home and commercial use. Sports Planet will also stock a wide variety of sportswear and related accessories for mainstream sports activities such as, swimming, tennis, badminton, squash, hockey, cricket, rugby, football and golf.

It has secured local brand licences to resell sports gear and equipment marketed under the Proform, NordicTrack, FreeMotion, Puma, Adidas and Nike brands. The store will also stock a variety of Arena, Babolat, Head, Grays, Gilbert, Mitre and Callaway Golf products among others.
