Nakumatt has opened its 61st branch as it consolidates its market. The opening of Nakumatt Kitisuru located at the new Kitisuru Place shopping complex in Nairobi comes hot on the heels of last week’s opening of Nakumatt Emali on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Covering a shopping floor area of more than 10,000 square feet, Nakumatt Kitisuru will operate as a fully-fledged supermarket. This will enhance retail services in the booming Nairobi West Sub County, which is also serviced by Nakumatt Westgate, Nakumatt Village and Nakumatt Highridge branches.

The new Nakumatt Kitisuru is the retailer’s 24th branch in Nairobi County. The opening of the two stores (Nakumatt Emali and Nakumatt Kitisuru) have also served to push up Nakumatt’s local staffing force to more than 7,000 team, making the retailer one of the top three formal employers in the country.

Speaking at the opening of the new Nakumatt Kitisuru today, Nakumatt Holdings Regional Operations and Strategy Director Thiagarajan Ramamurthy confirmed that the firm’s expansion strategies are on course. The retailer, he added, is undertaking a strategic customer experience enhancement programme to raise the bar on formal retailing in Kenya and the East African region.

While acknowledging the growing competitiveness in the local retail scene – where smaller retailers like Tuskys are vying for a bigger share of the market – Mr Ramamurthy disclosed that Nakumatt has been polishing its business and marketing strategies.  According to Nakumatt’s internal estimates, the local formal retail penetration rate currently stands at about 18%, providing for a wide serviceable market by local and international players alike.

“We have an army of loyal shoppers, formidable force of diligent staffers, dedicated suppliers and committed partners willing to walk the talk with us and we believe that gives us an edge. That is why our footprint is growing by the way,” he noted.
