Nairobi layman in trouble for stealing free newspapers

A man who admitted to stealing copies of the free People Daily newspaper is set to be sentenced for the crime today. Mr James Ngugi Ng’ang’a admitted on Thursday that he had on the previous day stolen 24 copies of the newspaper, dated July 8, 2015 valued at Ksh2,400.

The crime was committed at the Uhuru Highway-Haile Selassie roundabout in Nairobi. “Yes, it is true your honour, I am guilty,” Mr Ngugi told the court.

The People Daily, which is the owned by Mediamax Limited, is distributed to the public along busy highways and busy places, for free. Mr Ngugi could not be sentenced yesterday as the prosecution had not taken before court the copies he admitted to have stolen, the Nation reports.

Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo deferred the sentencing to today to allow the prosecution to present the exhibits in court. “The prosecution request allowed. Sentencing will be done tomorrow,” the magistrate ruled.

Mr Ng’ang’a is also accused of dishonestly handling 24 copies of the newspaper dated July 8, while knowing that the same had been stolen. He faced two counts of stealing and handling stolen property contrary to the law.
