The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says inadequate funding remains the biggest challenge on planning for the 2017 General Election, Capital FM reports, raising fears of delays if the finacial deficit is not bridged in good time.

The Commission’s chairman Issack Hassan said Ksh2 billion is needed for the exercise to be held on August 8, 2017, as provided for in the Constitution but the allocated funds are not enough. He further announced that a voter registration exercise will be held between February 14 and March 15, 2016 targeting eight million voters.

He further hailed the Supreme Court ruling on progressive diaspora voting saying that they are now working on regulations to govern it. According to the policy, a country will need at least 3,000 Kenyans registered with the mission abroad to qualify as a polling station and participate in the polls.

He further decried the rising cases of hate speech which he says are polarising the country.
