Just like in the previous year, Education Cabinet Fred Matiangi did not rank schools and candidates based on their performance in the 2015 KCSE. Ranking of schools in national examinations was banned by the ministry in 2014 in order to eliminate cut-throat competition among institutions.
Following the ban, Kenyans devised other ways of knowing how schools and candidates performed in the national examinations. For schools, one can tell by comparing results from different institutions. Media houses resorted to relying on candidates’ feeds to compile a list of the top performers.
In the KSCE 2015 results released by Matiangi, 2,636 students scored the highest mean grade of A (plain). And 75% (1,976) of the top scorers are male. Here is a list of some of the KCSE 2015 top performers, not in hierarchical order, based on information gathered by The Standard:
- Adalla Andre Otieno – A (plain). Mean grade of 84 points. Subject scores: English A, Kiswahili A, Mathematics A, Biology A, Physics A, Chemistry A, Geography A, Business Studies A.
- Apiyo Maria – A (plain). Mean grade of 84 points. Subject scores: English A, Kiswahili A, Mathematics A, Biology A, Physics A, Chemistry A, Geography A, German A.
- Mayaka Simeon Nyachae – A plain. Mean grade of 83 points. Subject scores: English A, Kiswahili A, Mathematics A, Biology A, Physics A- (minus), Chemistry A, CRE A-(minus), Business Studies A.
- Orondo Collins Okungu – A (plain). Mean grade of 83 points. Subject scores: English A-(minus), Kiswahili A, Mathematics A, Biology A, Physics A, Chemistry A, Geography A, Business Studies A.
- Siaya Qillian Ndeso – A (plain). Mean grade of 83 points. Subject scores: English A, Kiswahili A-(minus), Mathematics A, Biology A, Physics A, Chemistry A, Geography A, Business Studies A.
- Kiprop Herbert Mowo – A(plain). Mean grade of 83 points. Subject scores: English A-(minus), Kiswahili A, Mathematics A, Biology A, Physics A, Chemistry A, CRE A, ELEC B+(plus).
- Omurwa Maurice Magembe – A (plain). Mean grade of 83 points. Subject scores: English A, Kiswahili A, Mathematics A-(minus), Biology A, Physics B+(plus), Chemistry A, History A, Business Studies A.
Other top performers in the KCSE 2015 exams are: Mokua Fadhili Obiria, Kyenze Austin Munyao, Bellut Linda Jerop, Mugambi Hiram Migwi, Misach Nabboth Onyango, Bichii Ian Kiplimo. They all got a mean grade of A (plain) of 82 points.
According to the KCSE 2015 results, only 31.52% (165,766) of the candidates attained grade C+ and above. About 525,802 candidates registered for KCSE 2015 exams; a rise from 485,547 in 2014.
