Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) has issued an alert over the consumption of ‘Maggi’ noodles after its recall from stores in India because it contains high amount of lead that is unsafe and hazardous.
A statement released by Stephen Mutoro, the COFEX executive, says Kenya Bureau of Standards has yet to issue an alert on the food product and expressed fears that the country may become a dumping ground for the ‘defective’ product manufactured by food company Nestle.
“We are demanding that supermarkets and other outlets stocking this product should have it returned to the suppliers immediately because it is harmful to the health of consumers,” Mr Mutoro said.
“We are also demanding assurances from the government that our ports and other points of entry will clearly indicate that these products are banned from entering the country until their safety is guaranteed,” he added.
Mutoro said government authorities need to step in and carry out thorough investigations into the matter to ensure that no member of the public suffers from the consumption of the noodles.
