Kenya Power (KP) has commenced a facelift of its equipment in Juja town to help solve power outages affecting the region. The project which will cost around Ksh44 million is part of the countrywide initiative dubbed Boresha Stima Viwandani.
Juja has emerged as a potential commercial and social hubs, housing social joints where people meet to unwind after a busy week. The project will see the town and its vicinities achieve an improved power supply, according to the firm’s Managing Director and CEO Ben Chuma.
“We want to improve the quality of power supply to Juja town and its suburbs,” noted Chuma, adding that the Boresha Stima Viwandani project will also involve upgrading and repairing the existing power lines. The company is banking on financial institutions for loans to fast-track the process.
So far KP has approached Stima Savings and Credit Cooperative, Jamii Bora Bank, Equity Bank and National Bank to avail credit for fruition of the project. “Kenya Power has carried out similar upgrading programme in over forty stations across the country since the project began in 2014. We have also started negotiating with financial institutions to give us loans because these projects are quite expensive,” added Chuma.
In line with this, African Development Bank (AfDB) has committed Ksh13 billion in the ‘last mile’ initiative that will see extension of the grid nearer to homesteads in a bid to connect more families with electricity.
