KBC doesn’t owe Mzee Ojwang and group a cent

The Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and Technology, Dr Fred Matiang’i, today visited Mzee Ojwang’ of the Vitimbi Comedy group at the Lion’s Eye Hospital in Loresho. During the visit, the Cabinet Secretary wished Mzee Ojwang’ a quick recovery, and said the government will offset his medical bills.

Mzee Ojwang, whose real name in Benson Wanjau, was rescued from his home in Nairobi with failing eyesight.

Dr Matiang’i appreciated Mr  Ojwang’s contribution in entertainment world over the last three decades. Dr Matiang’i dispelled rumours that the Vitimbi Group had been neglected by the government and was owed money by the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). He said that while their contract with the State Broadcaster had expired, they had been paid all their dues.

Addressing the media, he urged Kenyans to adopt the culture of saving for future. “Its time as Kenyans we began thinking about individual responsibilities that link us to the future,” the CS said. “Responsibilities must be shared between the individual and the government.”

Dr Matiang’i commended the Lions Eye Hospital for their contribution in giving back to the public, adding that he was confident with the treatment the hospital was according Mzee Ojwang.

Mzee Ojwang commended the CS for devoting his time to visit him. During the visit, the Cabinet secretary was accompanied by the management of the hospital, Mzee Ojwang’s entertainment colleagues, KBC Managing Director Waithaka Waihenya, Information Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Ezekiel Mutua, the Director of Public Communications, Denis Chebitwey and other officials from the Ministry.
