Standard Seven pupil’s dream to have breakfast with DP comes true

It all started with a poem. Followed by a promise of bananas – and ended with breakfast at the Deputy President William Ruto’s official residence in Karen, Nairobi.

The dream of Spasha Mereka, 13, a Standard Seven pupil at Pioneer School in Murang’a, finally came yesterday when his colleagues and teachers were invited for breakfast with Mr Ruto.

At 7 am yesterday, the 62-seater school bus arrived at the official residence of the Deputy President with 45 pupils and teachers and – believe it or not – a bunch of bananas.

The visit was put in motion two weeks ago in Murang’a when Master Mereka (pictured below with DP) recited a poem on Mr Ruto’s humble background during the school’s thanksgiving ceremony.

The young boy promised to deliver a bunch of bananas to show his appreciation. Yesterday, Mereka did just that. The overwhelming poem titled “My inspiration” captured the DPs fairy tale journey to the country’s second in command.

Master Mereka did not stop there; he had used the occasion to request the DP to invite him for breakfast in Nairobi where they could share a banana from Murang’a County.

Deputy President is expected to share the bunch with President Uhuru Kenyatta. Mr Ruto chatted freely and posed for pictures with the boys and their teachers as they enjoyed breakfast. The country, he said, offers an opportunity for every child to excel and urged them take their studies seriously by working hard and paying attention to detail and guidance from both parents and teachers.

Mr. Ruto said his life was a testimony of what this country can offer to all regardless of their background. “Looking at me is looking at the possibility of what Kenya gives to each of us,” he said. “Your dreams are valid; all you need to do is work hard by being consistent and listening to teachers,” he said.
