The Kenyan market has just attracted a major player in the sex – oh, sorry – condoms industry.Moods premium condoms took Machakos town by storm during the recent Masaku 7s with an activation that featured a bevy of sexy beauties who painted the town blue.

Moods is a premium flagship brand of HLL Lifecare Ltd and comprises variants such as 1500 Dots, Allnight and Absolute Xtasy among others. HLL Lifecare is a fairly new entrant in Kenyan contraceptives market and is looking at annexing a part of Kenya’s growing condoms market through connecting with the youth.

To formulate effective and acceptable approaches that encourage safer sexual behaviour, the government has consistently advocated the need to understand young people’s sexual behaviour.

The company is one of the world’s largest condom manufactures with an annual capacity of 1.3 billion condoms. Moods condoms are presently available in more than 20 variants across the world with presence in Canada, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Europe, South America and the Caribbean Islands.

A  recent survey carried out by PSI/Kenya in revealed a great improvement in consistent condom use among unmarried people, as well as an increase in societal support for  condom use for protection. This is a telling indicator that the market is poised for growth.

Reliable statistics from PSI Kenya, there is a yawning gap between the 190 million condoms distributed annually and the 360 million required for universal need. Though this gap should be bridged by private entities the condom market does not attract enough commercial players.
