Bank M Tanzania is the main sponsor of the 2016 Forbes Africa Person of the Year Awards. The Forbes Africa Person of the Year Awards has, since its inception five years ago, attracted high calibre nominees from across Africa.

The awards celebrate ‘the individual who, for better or worse, has had the most influence on events of the year gone by’ and Forbes Africa has welcomed the participation of the public.

Following careful considerations from a hand-selected panel, the top five finalists have been posted online, making voting open to the public. “The public are a key component to the voting process for the Person of the Year Awards,” says Mr Chris Bishop, Editor of Forbes Africa, while noting that “the judges have a weighted vote for the Awards.”

The five finalists are:

  1. Michiel le Roux, the founder of Capitec Bank who has made banking more accessible for South Africans
  2. Thuli Madonsela, South Africa’s Former Public Protector who faced death threats in her quest to bring inconsistencies to the fore
  3. Ameenah Gurib, the Mauritian president who is spearheading the drive to protect her nation’s environment
  4. John Magufuli, the current President of Tanzania who has had a significant hand in boosting the nation’s economy
  5. The People of Rwanda, for how the country has reformed and is prioritizing gender equality
