AFC Leopards players are on a go slow again, for the second time in ten days.
The playing staff has refused to travel to Kisumu for Saturday’s Kenyan Premier League match against Western Stima following a contractual stand-off with the administrators led by Chairman Allan Kasavuli.
The team bus, was still packed at Kenya Cinema within Nairobi’s CBD, at 10:30am on Friday morning, four and a half hours past the agreed departure time. The team is owed three months in salary arrears, alongside training allowances and match winning bonuses by the management.
The players were reportedly paid Ksh1,700 each after their 2-0 win over Muhoroni Youth in Saturday. The club management has in the meantime kept away from the team.
“They are refusing to pick our calls. We need at least Ksh20,000 to pay rent. Without that we are not honouring the match,” one player who spoke to Nairobi News on condition of anonymity said.
The game against Stima is scheduled to be aired live on SuperSport. The players are also reaching out to the legislators from Western Kenya to bail them out. Only last week, CORD leader Raila Odinga and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho bailed out the team from a Mombasa hotel where they had been detained for non-payment of bills.
