The government has put in place elaborate measures to deliver on the school laptops project, which was a key pillar in the Jubilee manifesto in the last election. Cabinet and Principal secretaries will take lead in overseeing the countrywide distribution of laptops for teachers and digital tablets for Standard One pupils to officially be rolled out tomorrow.

In an initiative to be spearheaded by the Ministry of ICT through ICT Authority, the Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) is expected to cover all the 23,951 primary schools in different parts of the country by this December.

“On Friday September 30, 2016, ICT Cabinet secretary Joe Mucheru will visit Ortum Boys’ Primary School and Sebit Primary School in Central Pokot sub-county to distribute the devices,” said an invite sent to newsrooms yesterday.

Mucheru will, however, give a detailed schedule on how the implementation of the project will be undertaken during a joint press conference at Teleposta Tower’s Media Centre today. Other CSs to attend include Education counterpart Fred Matiang’i, Charles Keter (Energy) and Devolution and Planning’s Mwangi Kiunjuri.

The exercise aims to deliver more than 1.2 million devices which are fitted with Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) approved content. Already, the content for Class One and Two is available in five subjects while the content for other classes will be developed later.

About 80,000 teachers have also been trained on incorporating ICT in teaching and learning in readiness for the programme. “To enhance quality delivery of the programme and support the teachers, young ICT graduates, under the Presidential Digital Talent Programme have been deployed to every sub-county to carry out on-site training, quality inspection and other tasks,” said a statement from ICT ministry.
