A former police officer who caused drama at Lang’ata Police Station in Nairobi on Wednesday morning has been charged with creating disturbance and causing breach of the peace. Mr Charles Kamau Mugo denied that he insulted senior police officers demanding to be reinstated to the service.

His lawyer told the court that he resigned last January and had gone to collect his clearance certificate. The prosecution said Mr Mugo insulted senior police officers in the police service besides sleeping at the entrance of the police station.

Mr Mugo was found on a mattress and dressed in sacks on top of his suit at the entrance of the Nairobi station. As the charges were read to him before Kibera senior principal magistrate Derrick Kuto, Mr Mugo appeared composed.

His lawyer urged the court to release him on free bond, saying the charges are a misdemeanour.  “These charges are as a result of him being a police officer. Although he resigned, according to standing orders of the service he remains an officer because he has not been cleared. That is the reason he was at the station,” the lawyer submitted.

Ms Angela Okallo, a state prosecutor opposed free bond. But the magistrate released him on Ksh30,000 bond with an alternative cash bail of Ksh20,000. The case will be mentioned on July 27.
