Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has urged the government officials and other Kenyans to support Kenya Airways (KQ) business. Speaking during the unveiling of the Kenya Airways “Magical Kenya” branded aircraft on Wednesday June 29th, the Cabinet Secretary said government officials have been directed to use the national carrier when travelling starting 1st July.

“Starting 1st July, government officials must travel with Kenya Airways. Cabinet has made the decision and implementation begins Friday. Look at countries such as Britain, its government officials always use British Airways, which communicates loyalty. If we are therefore asking people to buy Kenya, as government we must lead by example and buy Kenya,” said the CS.

Mr Balala said unveiling of the Kenya Airways “Magical Kenya” branded aircraft was yet another opportunity for the country as a destination to leverage on platforms that are geared towards increasing tourists. “Increased destination presence through enhanced in-market activities such as campaigns and promotions with KQ will go a long way in ensuring improved awareness on the destination,” he said.

The branding comes after the tourism sector signed an MoU with KQ last year. The branding will play a key role in increasing the destination visibility and with this the possibility to translate it into a decision to travel to Kenya.
The branded Dreamliner flies into key routes like London, Paris and Hong Kong and “gives the opportunity to passengers to emotionally connect with the destination and keep it on top of their mind,” he said.

He said the ministry will identify KQ offices in select markets to undertake destination branding and equip them with tourist information on travel, hotel bookings and other hotel packages for the potential tourists as per the MOU with KQ.

He said tourism was on the rebound, with January-March statistics showing growth in numbers. He further added that KQ will be launching a direct flight to Cape Town in South Africa on 12th July, 2016 in addition to Johannesburg.
