Mwea MP Peter Gitau has been arrested in Malindi after he was allegedly caught bribing voters. He is said to have been buying voters ID cards in opposition CORD supporters for them not to vote in the Malindi parliamentary by-election ad thus give the Jubilee candidate a better chance to win.

Police arrested the MP at Kikuyuni area and took him to Malindi police station after finding him with thousands of shillings.  Mr Gitau is being held in police custody awaiting court appearance this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) communication’s director Phillip Etale was arrested in Malindi, while Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu was ejected from a polling station as voting got under way today morning in the constituency with 55,853 voters.

Mr Etale was arrested early morning at about 1am in his hotel room in Malindi Town, according to security sources and his laptop confiscated. Security officials accused him of trying to hack the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission system. The party has, however, protested the move and termed the claims fake and part of state’s plan to intimidate their supporters in Malindi.

At Central Primary School polling station within Malindi Town, which has 3,110 registered voters, Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu (Jubilee) was thrown out after other agents complained that he was involved in “suspicious activities.’’

Mr Waititu went to the station as an agent for the JAP candidate but Presiding Officer Caleb Mogere told him that he needed to have a badge identifying him as such.
