More funds to expand rural electrification

The Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich budget seeks to boost generation of power. He says the target of generating 5,000 megawatts is on course. 

He said increased geothermal power generation has reduced the cost of power by 30%. He said this will reduce the cost of doing business and spur economic and industrial growth.

To enhance power generation, the cabinet secretary has allocated Ksh13.2 billion to Geothermal Development Corporation. And to sustain demand of power, he gave generously to power distribution and generation.

He said in his budget speech that the recent presidential incentive reducing power connection from Ksh35,000 to Ksh15,000 will boost electricity consumption.

He has allocated Ksh21.1 billion for power distribution, Ksh14.9 billion for rural electrification, Ksh4.9 billion to street lighting and Ksh1.9 billion for last mile connection.
